Installation... as easy as 1-2-3!

Turfgrass Sod allows you to enjoy a lawn of instant beauty and maturity without the usual time consuming hassles of seeding. When purchasing sod, consult a Michigan Sod Growers Association Member in your area to make sure your getting the finest quality turf available.

STEP 1 Measuring & Ordering

With a tape, measure the area of your planned lawn. Include these measurements on a sketch of the lawn area, with the length, width, and any unusual features. General rule is Length x Width of an area = Feet of sod needed. Your local turf farm will be glad to help you determine the number of feet you'll need.

STEP 2  Soil Preparation

For best results, rototil the area 4-6 inches deep. Slope area away from foundations. Soil test your area with the assistance of a qualified service in your area. Then rake in fertilizer, lime, peat, compost, etc. as needed to a depth of 3-4 inches. Rake and smooth the soil removing rocks, roots, and large clods. You can roll the area with a lawn roller 1/3 full of water. This will firm the area and show any low spots that may need more soil. Keep grade 1 inch below sidewalks or driveways. Water the prepared area to settle soil and provide a moist base for turf.

Step 3    Turf Installation

Install your lawn immediately upon delivery. Begin watering your lawn within 30 minutes of installation. Turf is a living plant that requires ground contact and moisture to survive. Begin installing turf along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or sidewalk. Butt and push edges and ends together tightly without stretching. Avoid gaps or overlaps. Stagger the joints in each row in a brick like fashion, using a large sharp knife to trim corners, edges. Avoid leaving small strips along outer edges as they will not retain moisture. On slopes, place turf pieces across the slope. To avoid air pockets and indentations, try not to kneel or walk on turf while it's being installed or just after watering.

Step 4    Watering

Give your lawn at least 1 inch of water within 1/2 hour of installation. Water daily, or more often if needed, keeping turf moist until it is firmly rooted. (about 2 weeks) Then less frequently and deeper watering should begin. Weather conditions will dictate the amount of  frequency of watering. Make sure your new lawn has enough moisture to withstand hot, dry or windy periods.  Water areas near buildings more often where reflect heat dries the turf.
